We want to say a huge thank you and good luck to Meriel Davis from HORIZON CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC, who is taking on an incredible challenge to raise vital funds for RMF.

Meriel and her friend Charlie Beamish will be racing in the Yukon 1000, a tough 1000 mile canoe race on the Yukon River. Starting in Whitehorse, Canada, and finishing at the coast of Alaska, they will paddle from Canada into the USA in a two-person canoe, completely self-sufficient with all their food, camping gear, and safety kit.

They will face:

-Up to 18 hours paddling per day to meet cut-off times
-Wild animals including bears and wolves, carrying bear spray for safety
-Hypothermia, dehydration, exhaustion, rapids, and navigation challenges with no support en route
-The strict rule of a minimum 6 hours camping on land each night, with disqualification if breached

Despite these risks, Meriel is excited about experiencing:

-Stunning Alaskan and Canadian wilderness landscapes
-Wildlife such as bears, wolves, caribou, bison, golden eagles, beavers, and wild salmon
-The midnight sun, paddling under continuous daylight in summer

Training has been tough. Meriel only started canoeing this February and lives on the South Coast while Charlie lives in London, meaning training sessions have involved long river stints and wild camping to prepare. Together, they’ve been learning rapid navigation skills, sport specific strength and stamina, and wilderness safety.

Meriel is taking on this epic challenge to raise funds for RMF, supporting our work with vulnerable children, teenagers, and adults across Sussex. We are so grateful for her dedication, bravery, and commitment to making a difference.

Thank you, Meriel, for thinking of RMF. We wish you all the luck for this incredible expedition, we are behind you all the way.

Please consider sponsoring Meriel today to help us continue changing lives.
