About Russell

Founder of RMF

Russell was a professional footballer for 15 years. He was born in Brighton and attended Varndean School and then Varndean College, representing Brighton Boys throughout his time at school.He was a member of the England Schools Under 18s side and after A levels was signed by EFL League two side Wycombe Wanderers.

He made more than 100 appearances for Wycombe and then moved onto Peterborough United where he became their youngest ever captain, leading them to promotion to the Championship.

Burgess Hill Town FC Hosts Successful Charity Quiz Night for RMF

In a demonstration of community spirit and generosity, Burgess Hill Town Football Club became the backdrop for a lively charity event organised by Tina Alfieri, RMA Girls Football Co-ordinator , Burgess Hill Town FC Owner and a dedicated supporter of the Russell Martin Foundation. The event, a quiz night, not only brought together friends, families, and football enthusiasts but also raised over £200 in support of the Foundation's impactful community projects.

Tina's successful quiz night stands as a shining example of how individuals, driven by passion and a shared sense of community, can come together to create positive change. The Russell Martin Foundation would like to thank Tina, Burgess Hill Town FC, and all those who contributed to the success of this remarkable event.

Russell Martin Foundation Nominated for Community Hero Award at Sussex Business Awards 2023

The Russell Martin Foundation has proudly emerged as a finalist for the Community Hero Award at the prestigious Sussex Business Awards 2023. This nomination recognises the Foundation's outstanding contributions to the community through various impactful projects.

One of the standout initiatives at RMF is the Extra Time Project. This program focuses on creating opportunities for individuals who struggle in mainstream school. By providing a supportive environment,  The Extra Time Project empowers people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in education and put them back on the right track.

The Disability Department at RMF has been instrumental in promoting inclusivity and accessibility in sports. Through tailored programs and initiatives, the Foundation has opened doors for individuals with disabilities to actively participate in football.

RMF's commitment to giving back is further demonstrated by its Free Football for Disadvantaged Children initiative. By removing financial barriers, the Foundation ensured that children, regardless of their economic background, has the opportunity to experience the fun that comes with playing football.

In addition, RMF has taken strides in women's football with its Over 30s Women's Football program. Breaking stereotypes and encouraging women of all ages to pursue their passion for football.

The Sussex Business Awards nomination for the Community Hero Award is a well-deserved recognition of the Russell Martin Foundation's efforts to create positive social change throughout Sussex.

RMA Varndean College star Joe Overy Selected for England College Football Squad

We are thrilled to announce another remarkable achievement within the Russell Martin Academy, Joe Overy, a dedicated student on the RMA Varndean College education programme, has recently been selected to represent the England College Football Association. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone not only for Joe but also for the RMA Varndean College Education programme, as it is the fifth time in the last five years that an RMA Varndean College player has been chosen to don the prestigious Three Lions shirt.

Jay Lovett, the Head Coach of RMA Varndean, expressed his pride in Joe's achievement, stating, "We are immensely proud of Joe and his well-deserved selection to the England College football squad. Joe is an exciting talent, and I'm confident he will excel in his upcoming fixtures for England”

As Joe Overy prepares to put on the England Shirt in the upcoming fixtures, the entire Russell Martin Foundation wishes him the best of luck.
